Take A Step
Take A Step is our counselling service for survivors of abuse. This initiative accompanies survivors step by step, guiding them in seeking safe spaces and providing a range of pro bono services directly through Durga. With mental health deeply integrated into all our programs, Take A Step ensures that emotional check-ins, self-expression, and consistent counselling remain at the core of the support survivors receive.
The safe and supportive space built during the Take A Step sessions enables women to exercise their rights, and take informed steps to strengthen their autonomy. At its core, Take A Step is survivor-centric and community-focussed and it recognises that justice for survivors of gender-based violence goes beyond punitive/carceral responses. Take A Step instead moves towards a restorative justice framework, enabling a space where people can reclaim agency, safety, and dignity, while exploring responses that prioritise their well-being.
Our engagement focuses on five key areas:
- Supporting women connect to counseling, nutrition, health services, safe spaces, police, and legal support when facing violence or other challenges.
- Enabling women to create safe spaces for themselves, understand their rights, be aware of laws, access redressal mechanisms, and strengthen negotiation and decision-making skills.
- Promoting mental health, discussing sexual and reproductive health, and providing guidance on where to access relevant support.
- Educating women about personal safety, simple ways to protect themselves, tips on workplace behaviour, and strategies to maintain steady employment.
- Supporting women’s self-reliance, fostering confidence, encouraging education, and strengthening resilience to navigate social and workplace challenges while creating a pathway to economic and social empowerment.
Beyond individual learning, these sessions fostered a supportive and joyful community, where women can express themselves, build friendships, and feel solidarity. Discussions on mental health and well-being were particularly impactful, equipping participants with tools to navigate everyday challenges with resilience and confidence.
