SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN COLLEGES

Early adolescence is an age of experimenting and growth as individuals and in this space of growth and advancement, safety is an element that is paramount to ensuring that young minds develop their personalities without worries and with confidence.

And this confidence will come forth when one starts thinking about safety and making it an integral part of their waking lives.

Harassment in Colleges:

  • Case 2 – On the corridor

SEXUAL HARASSMENT IN PUBLIC SPACE

Public Transport can be very trying for us. The vehicles are packed and we have all kinds of people packed in it. In this module we will see how one can address simple issues that we face on an everyday basis when we are in a bus. This case is not unique. It has happened to each of us at some point or the other in life.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT AT WORKSPACE

This is classic. This can actually be applicable to harassment in any relationship with power, where the person abusive or harassing comes from a place of power. We have shown situations of two kinds –

The colleague overbearing and eating into your space as you work

The colleague just staring at you as you work

CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

How does one equip their children to handle such situations?

How do we communicate to a child to be watchful and yet not be fearful about such people?

How do we talk to the child to ensure that the child first feels safe to share this information with us and then can later take decisive action?

How do we ensure that we as responsible adults, create an environment of safety that builds the child’s confidence and does not make him/ her fearful?

ROLE OF THE BYSTANDER

Often in many situations of harassment, we are not alone. Similarly, when there is a situation of harassment that someone else is facing, we may be around. What we are highlighting you towards is Bystanders. These are people who are usually around during difficult situations. They are around and can be harnessed and definitely have a game-changing role to play. Do we play it though?

As a bystander, most often we wonder how we can help address a situation because we are worried about our safety too. At Durga, we believe that your role is absolutely essential and it can be simple too!

  • Case 1 – The role of a bystander
  • Case 2 – Bystander in a bus stop
  • Case 3 – Bystander on the road
  • Case 4 – Bystander in a bus

PHYSICAL SELF-DEFENCE

To make this learning simple, we have created a short rhyme to help you learn this better.

Eyes, Ears, Mouth and Nose, Throat, Groin, Fingers and Toes!

When things get very physical and someone actually tries to harm you physically, then what do you do?

How does someone who is shorter, less physically stronger and possibly not at all athletic deal with such a situation?

Just the way, there are some parts of a man’s body which are stronger, there are some other parts that are weak too!

No matter how many hours he spends in the gym, there are some parts of him that will never grow stronger or tougher. And just the way, a man has some tough parts, women too have strong parts that can be used to their advantage in such dire situations.

Come, let’s explore this part too!

DURGA HABITS, THE OATH AND PROMISES

When we talk of safety for ourselves and others around us there are a few principles or habits that we urge you to look at when you make safety a priority.

These habits will help you address all harassment anywhere at any time irrespective of your gender, age or physical condition.

At Durga, our work begins and ends with you and we would like to take our message of safety and respect to every individual we know.

We believe that this can happen when we take our safety and our respect seriously and we pledge to do it not just for ourselves but for all women everywhere.

This Course Includes:
1) The Durga Habits
2) The Durga Oath & Promises
